Acceptance, Inclusion, and Respect

Sabina Holland, MDWelcome! I am thrilled that you are considering the Brown University Pediatric Residency Program at Hasbro Children’s for your residency training.  Our program has a longstanding commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all of our physicians in training.  We recognize that diversity enriches the educational experience by exposing healthcare providers to a broad range of cultural perspectives—an essential foundation for developing deeper empathy, understanding patients more fully, and delivering exceptional care.

The Department of Pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School is committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and supportive residency training program. Grounded by our overarching goal of delivering exceptional patient care, our training program celebrates the unique lived experiences had by the members of our community and the resulting contribution to the care of our patients.

As you research residency programs, I invite you to learn about the culture of Providence and the greater Rhode Island area.  The City of Providence is racially, ethnically, socioeconomically, and spiritually diverse. Rhode Island is much more than the home of outstanding universities and wonderful beaches, we hope you take a peek at some of the things that make Rhode Island incredible.

The Brown Pediatric Residency Program is proud to partner with the Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (OBEDI), the Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA) and the Brown Sexual Gender Minority Alliance (BSGMA). We are thrilled that several of our residents and faculty are active participants in programming offered by OBEDI including Brown Advocates for Social Change and Equity (BASCE) & Mentoring and Educating Diverse Students and Trainees to Excel as Physicians (MEDSTEP). We invite you to explore more about the supportive community here at Brown University and Brown University Health.

As you begin your journey in finding a pediatric residency training program, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have, whether about Providence or our residency program.

Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA)

The Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA) offers programs and resources to support housestaff through mentorship, networking, and advocacy. The BMHA provides opportunities to explore issues related to the experiences of housestaff and faculty from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine with the goals of building community within Brown, fostering the development of professional and social connections that will increase retention, and using the strength of a diverse workforce to more effectively meet the needs of a diverse population. Housestaff from all backgrounds are welcome to join.

Brown Sexual Gender Minority Alliance

The Brown Sexual Gender Minority Alliance is a resident and faculty organization for all members of the campus community interested in exploring issues related to people who identify as LGBTQ+ in medicine and health care.

Committee on Anti-Racism & Health Equity

The Brown Pediatric Residency and Brown University Health’s leadership recognize racism as a public health emergency that threatens our ability to achieve health equity. Our shared values – Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence – leave no room for racism or injustice. We must continue to have zero tolerance for any acts that are not in keeping with our values. In the words of Angela Davis, “it is not enough to be non-racist; we must be anti-racist.”

Brown University Health formed an advisory committee, charged with advising executive leadership on anti-racism and health equity strategies to implement across our system. This standing committee comprises approximately 30 members, with representation from across affiliates, job roles, and demographics. Our two past resident representatives were Alexis Thompson (Chief Resident) and Vanessa Ogueri (’21).

MedTalks

Medical Education through Diversity (MED) Talks is a speaker series initiated in 2015 as a means of creating and facilitating dialogue between patients and the medical community that cares for them. Representatives from minority populations are invited as panelists and asked to share their cultural values and reflect on how such perspectives influence their interface with the medical system and their healthcare providers. Audience members are encouraged to ask difficult ethical questions aimed at increasing provider understanding of the most  culturally competent and humble care. This project is supported by grants from the Gold Foundation and funds from the Brown Minority Housestaff Association. Past panels have explored bias and disparity amongst the following groups and communities: refugees, LGBTQ youth, Jehovah’s Witnesses, incarcerated patients, homeless patients, veterans, patients suffering from obesity, victims of sexual assault and trafficking, and those with histories of trauma.

Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion sponsors an annual event at which time residency program applicants visit clinical sites, meet with residency leadership, and attend a networking dinner alongside applicants from all Brown residency programs. This event presents an opportunity to learn more about living and learning in Providence before submitting rank lists.
