Scholarly Activities

Hasbro Children’s is home to talented clinicians and physician-scientists who deliver excellent pediatric care to the greater Rhode Island and Southern New England population. As a tertiary care center and affiliate of the The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, many of Hasbro’s faculty members pursue basic, translational, and clinical research, with impactful contributions to the medical community.

Residents are highly encouraged to participate in scholarly activities, both as collaborators/co-investigators, and as primary investigators.

For even more information about the research opportunities and resources for resident research at Brown, visit the Pediatrics website.

Pediatrics Research

A vibrant research enterprise, driven by Brown University faculty and trainees at Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and Women & Infants Hospital, is advancing child health across a broad spectrum of scientific fields.

Research Track

Residents interested in research can apply to the Brown University Research Scholarship Track (BURST) at the end of their PGY-1 year. This track provides residents with mentorship matching, project selection, and tailored support in reaching their scholarship goals. Residents who participate in our research track also attend a quarterly seminar which addresses more in-depth research topics including how to design and defend a study, analytical tools for data presentation, how to write a quality manuscript in a timely manner, and ethical principles in conducting research. This track is led by our department’s Director of Resident Research, Lawren Wellisch MD, ScM.

Research Elective

As part of an individualized curriculum, residents interested in completing research or scholarly activities can choose to dedicate a portion of their elective time to working on research or scholarship-related activities. Elective time can be used for any portion of the scholarship experience including, but not limited to, data collection, abstract and poster development, or manuscript writing.

Research Curriculum

Education on research topics such as project selection, abstract and manuscript development, and clinical statistics is integrated into our program’s yearly lecture series.

Conferences

The Department of Pediatrics hosts an annual Pediatrics Scholarship Day where residents, fellows, and attendings present their scholarly work. Residents are also strongly encouraged to present their work at local and national meetings and are eligible to receive financial support for presentations at conferences requiring travel.

Other Scholarship Opportunities

Not all scholarship is research.  There are also many resources at Hasbro to support residents interested in non-research related scholarship such as quality improvement, public health advocacy, narrative medicine, and teaching/medical education.

For even more information about faculty research and department-level resources for resident research and scholarship at Brown, visit our Department of Pediatrics research webpage.

Journal Club

Our program offers a quarterly evidence-based medicine journal club where recent systematic reviews or evidence-based clinical guidelines are reviewed in depth.
