Brian Lurie, MD MPH, joined Hasbro Children’s Hospital as the pediatric residency program director in May, 2023. Dr. Lurie graduated from Tufts University and received his medical degree from The Sackler School of Medicine, New York State American Program in Tel Aviv, Israel.  He went on to complete his residency at North Shore University Hospital in New York and obtain his Masters of Public Health from Columbia University. Dr. Lurie has dedicated his career to academic medicine, serving as the Pediatric Residency Associate Program Director at three institutions, most recently Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC.  In Charlotte, Dr. Lurie also served as the Division Director of General Academic Pediatrics.  He has also served in regional and national leadership positions for organizations such as the Association of Pediatric Program Directors and the Academic Pediatric Association. Dr. Lurie’s sense of purpose is centered around advancing health for children through equity-focused leadership, medical education, and faculty development.  Much of his scholarly work involves developing curricula caring for LGBTQA+ youth.  Other interests include promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in academic medicine and working with underserved populations. 

Eddie Gill is our newest Associate Program Director. He received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. He completed residency in pediatrics at Tufts Children’s Hospital, where he also completed fellowship in pediatric hospital medicine. Dr. Gill previously served as the associate program director of the pediatric hospital medicine fellowship at Tufts Children’s Hospital. Eddie lives with his wife and 3 children in far-away Massachusetts. Outside of his love for clinical medicine, feedback and evaluation, he is a passionate nerd with varied interests including playing senior men's league hockey, leading a weekly Dungeons and Dragon's group and listening to Science Fiction and Fantasy audiobooks on his long commute to work.

Allison Heinly completed her undergraduate studies at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, followed by her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. She then completed her pediatric residency and was selected as chief resident at Brown University/Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she received the Brown University Student Award in Recognition of an Outstanding Teacher and the Award for Outstanding Dedication to Patient Care. She worked for 2 years in private practice at Blackstone Valley Pediatrics before returning to Hasbro Children’s Hospital Primary Care as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 2017. Since then, she has been selected twice for the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award for the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Her career interests are in medical education and tobacco cessation/vaping. 

Sarah S. Welsh, MD is a pediatric intensivist and the Medical Director of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). She completed medical school, pediatric residency, and served as chief resident at Golisano Children’s Hospital (University of Rochester School of Medicine) in Rochester, New York. She completed her pediatric critical care medicine fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her clinical and research interests include neurocritical care, including traumatic brain injury and status epilepticus, as well as resuscitation care, medical education, and implementation science.

Erica Chung, MD is a pediatric hospitalist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital with an interest in medical education. After graduating from Brown Medical School, Dr. Chung went on to complete her pediatric residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program (Boston Children’s Hospital / Boston Medical Center). She continued as faculty at Boston Children’s Hospital and joined the pediatric hospital medicine division at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in 2011. Dr. Chung enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. She is a Mary B. Arnold mentor and the director of the pediatric subinternship at the Warren Alpert Medical School. She is currently involved in a multi-center research study on residents-as-teachers.

Michael Herzlinger, MD is an Assistant (Clinical) Professor of Pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Hasbro Children’s Hospital.  He is the Program Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and a Mary B Arnold Mentor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  

Prior to his current position he completed Residency in Pediatrics and Fellowship in Pediatric GI at Brown University, Medical School at New York University School of Medicine, Postbaccalaureate studies at Columbia University in New York, and Bachelors of Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  

Dr. Herzlinger is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Katherine Mason is the Vice chair of education for the Department of Pediatrics and an Associate Professor of Pediatric Critical Care and Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the The Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. Her research has focused primarily on developing best practices in Medical Education, e.g. Learner Assessment, Professionalism and Faculty Development and Advocacy for Clinician Educators. She has also published in the fields of critical care and disaster medicine.

Dr. Mason further contributes to medical education initiatives through her national leadership roles in medical education as the immediate past chair of the Fellowship Executive Committee at the Association of Pediatric Program Directors and as a National Mentor through the New Century Scholars’ Program and the Educational Scholars’ Program, both of the Academic Pediatric Association.

Dr. Mason completed her undergraduate studies in Biomedical Ethics and Biology at Brown University, and her Medical Degree at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She did  her Pediatric Residency and Critical Care Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Nina Muralidhar is a pediatrician specializing in pediatric infectious diseases.

Dr. Muralidhar earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. She completed a residency in pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, which included working at Hasbro Children’s, where she was also chief resident. She completed a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital, and the antimicrobial stewardship track. During her fellowship, Dr. Muralidhar was the recipient of the Edward H. Cass Award for Clinical Excellence.

During her academic training, she earned an NIH/NAID T32 Grant to pursue research of the optimal duration of parenteral therapy for pediatric chronic osteomyelitis.

Dr. Muralidhar has been an adjunct faculty member with the Physician Assistant Program at Bryant University and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Paulo Pina, MD, MPH, is a pediatrician at Hasbro Children’s and division director of ambulatory and community medicine at Rhode Island Hospital.
Prior to his work in Rhode Island, Dr. Pina was pediatric network medical director of Family Health Centers at NYU Langone-Brooklyn and served as a clinical associate professor in the department of pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He has held academic positions with Albert Einstein College of Medicine and CUNY School of Medicine.

Dr. Pina had a years-long affiliation with St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, serving as president and vice-president of its medical board, associate director and program director of its pediatric residency program, and held leadership positions including associate chairman of its department of pediatrics. 

Dr. Pina obtained a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health degree in community health sciences from State University of New York at Downstate. He completed his residency in pediatrics at NYU/Bellevue Hospital Center-New York where he was chief resident. 

His scholarly and advocacy activities have focused on improving pediatric care quality, addressing the social determinants of health during medical visits, increasing
vaccination rates, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) use among adolescents, and health equity.

Dr. Alie Riese is an attending physician with the Department of Pediatrics’ Division of General Pediatrics and Community Health. She is a graduate of Amherst College and University of Massachusetts Medical School, and completed her Pediatrics residency at Brown University Health/Hasbro Children's training program. Following residency, she completed an Injury Prevention Research Fellowship with the Department of Emergency Medicine and obtained her Masters in Public Health from Brown University.

Currently, Dr. Riese directs the Hasbro Primary Care Clinic’s Urgent Care, which provides ambulatory acute care to the clinic’s 10,000+ pediatric patients. In this role, she works closely with Pediatric and Family Medicine residents and Alpert Medical School students. She is the assistant course director for the PC-PM program’s Population and Clinical Medicine I & II which occurs during the student’s third year. She is the assistant course director for the PC-PM program’s Population and Clinical Medicine I & II which occurs during the student’s 3rd year.

Dr. Riese’s research focuses on pediatric injury prevention. Specifically, her interests involve adolescent health risk behaviors, including youth violence, drugs and alcohol use, and sexual behavior, as well as improving doctor-patient communication around these topics.

Dr. Jeff Riese is a pediatric hospitalist at Hasbro Children's Hospital, with an interest in high flow nasal cannula use in bronchiolitis and medical education.  He graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in 2002.  Dr. Riese attended medical school at University of Massachusetts. In 2009, he came to Rhode Island for his pediatrics residency at the Brown University Health/Hasbro Children’s training program.  He was pediatric chief resident from 2012-2013.  He has served as Associate Pediatric Residency Program Director from 2013-2021. His research interests include pediatric hospital readmissions, high flow nasal cannula use in bronchiolitis, and medical education.   He is co-director of the pediatric curriculum for the intern prep course at The Warren Alpert Medical School.

Dr. Sediva recieved her medical degree at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.  She completed interniship and residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, NY and  pediatric critical care fellowship at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH.  She is a Medical Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Dr. Sediva is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.  Her interests are in medical simulation, medical education, quality improvement science and patient safety.

Dennisse Reyes (she/her) is a proud Puerto Rican who has called Rhode Island home since she was a toddler, when she, her brother and sister and her parents moved to Providence. After spending most of her life in Providence, she now lives in Cranston with her husband, her two young adult children, and their beloved dog, King Bling Reyes. A true Rhode Islander at heart, Dennisse firmly believes that anything more than a 30-minute drive requires serious consideration!

Family is at the center of everything she does. She shares a close bond with her sister and brother and absolutely adores her nieces and nephews. Professionally, Dennisse’s connection to Rhode Island Hospital began at the age of 15. Over the years, she has worked in a variety of roles across the organization, building relationships and becoming a familiar face to countless colleagues. For the past 23 years, she has been dedicated to the Pediatric Residency Program, where she truly finds great fulfillment in supporting residents, fostering their success, and watching them grow into outstanding physicians. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is the lifelong relationships she continues to build with many of the residents that graduate.

Outside of work, Dennisse enjoys spending quality time with her family and dog, King Bling Reyes. She is an AVID fan of Marc Anthony & Bad Bunny! She will continue to manifest her dreams of one day meeting Marc & Benito.  She also enjoys streaming series, crime podcasts, and is always looking for her next great listen or binge-worthy show. She loves Rhode Island's close-knit feel, friendly people, and beautiful four seasons, which provide breathtaking scenery opportunities for Dennisse to photograph throughout the year. Above all, Dennisse is passionate about helping others and feels fortunate to still be doing the work she genuinely loves every day.

Deborah is a lifelong Rhode Islander, and currently lives in North Providence. She works with all the residents throughout their training preparing schedules, extra clinics, and various activities. The thing she enjoys most about her job is to see the individual growth and transformation that takes place during the three to five years of residency here at RIH and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She has 3 beautiful adult children, grand-puppies, and enjoys spending time with them, hiking, running, and training for the next race! It is her passion to constantly advance the field of graduate medical education during such an exciting time and love working with the residents, faculty, and coordinators everyday! She is also excited to transfer her medical education and training skills to her role of providing support and coordinating the primary care training program, and ensuring that residents benefit from unique world class and innovative training.
