Biography

Bianca was born and raised in Massachusetts. She attended Barnard College, where she majored in Neuroscience & Behavior and minored in Spanish & Latin American Cultures. She completed her undergraduate research at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute in the labs of Stephen Rayport, MD, PhD, studying the co-release of dopamine and glutamate in the brain, and Ziva Cooper, PhD, studying the physiologic and psychological effects of marijuana and cocaine use. She continued her research after college in the lab of Jeffrey Friedman, MD, PhD, studying how the dorsal raphe contributes to feeding and locomotive behavior. She discovered an interest in endocrinology and obesity in the Friedman lab, which she wanted to pursue in her further studies. For that, she moved to Dallas, Texas to pursue her MD/PhD at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. She completed her PhD work in the lab of Philipp Scherer, PhD, studying how the insulin sensitivity of different adipose depots and adipocyte populations contribute to global metabolic health. She continues to be interested in the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and diabetes, and she plans to continue this focus as a future pediatric endocrinologist-scientist.  While at UTSW, she was involved in diversity & inclusion as well as patient advocacy work, starting student groups advocating for better patient care as well as for women and underrepresented minorities in science and medicine. She is passionate about providing equitable healthcare for all, especially those populations who are underserved. She is thrilled to be back home in New England for residency, and she is excited to serve the pediatric population here. She loves food, and she is excited to explore the many amazing restaurants of Providence. In her free time, Bianca enjoys cooking and eating with her husband, playing with her cats and dog, reading fiction, staying physically active, and re-discovering the beauty of New England.
